At least 60 Palestinians were killed and 284 others were injured in the Gaza Strip over the last 24 hours as a result of the ongoing Israeli genocide in the region, according to medical sources.
Local health authorities confirmed that the Palestinian death toll from the Israeli onslaught since October 2023 has risen to 54,381 fatalities, with an additional 124,381 people sustaining injuries. The majority of the victims are women and children.
According to the same sources, the death toll since Israel’s resumption of the genocide on March 18 after a two-month truce has also climbed to 4,117, in addition to 12,013 others injured.
The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, stated on Saturday that the volume of humanitarian aid currently reaching Gaza is vastly disproportionate to the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in the besieged territory.
In a press statement, Lazzarini warned that famine in Gaza can still be prevented — if there is political will.
“What we are asking for is not impossible,” he said, calling for the United Nations to be allowed to carry out its humanitarian role in delivering aid to those in need and upholding their dignity.
Lazzarini revealed that only 900 aid trucks had entered Gaza over the past two weeks — covering a mere 10% of the population’s daily needs. He stressed that halting the current famine requires political action, not just logistical measures.
He also urged that UN agencies and humanitarian organizations be allowed to resume their operations in Gaza, following a halt in aid truck deliveries that has been in place since March 2.
Lazzarini noted that during the previous ceasefire, UNRWA and other humanitarian groups had managed to bring in 600 to 800 trucks per day, underscoring that it is feasible to meet the aid needs if access is granted.
