EPAA launches Arabian Leopard Conservation Strategy Conference

The Arabian Leopard Conservation Strategy Conference started today at Sharjah Safari, organised by the Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) in Sharjah.

Held from 21st to 23rd October, the conference brings together experts and representatives from range countries including Oman, Yemen, and Saudi Arabia, alongside international speakers, to discuss the protection of the critically endangered Arabian Leopard.

The conference includes scientific discussions, working groups, and the formulation of strategies to address the challenges threatening the Arabian Leopard’s survival.

The event emphasises regional and international cooperation to ensure the species’ sustainability in its natural habitat.

In her opening speech, Hana Saif Al Suwaidi, Chairperson of EPAA, highlighted the importance of unifying strategies for the conservation and breeding of wildlife, aligning with Sharjah’s efforts under the directives of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

She praised the Emirate's role in wildlife conservation, including successful breeding programmes for endangered species such as the Arabian Leopard, notably at the Breeding Centre for Endangered Arabian Wildlife.

The first day featured sessions focused on the status of the Arabian Leopard in range countries, breeding programmes, and a review of the Arabian Leopard Conservation Strategy established in 2010.

Experts including Dr Urs Breitenmoser and Dr. Christine Breitenmoser-Würsten discussed objectives and strategies to protect the species from extinction.

The conference will continue with discussions on updating the vision for conservation and formulating goals through specialised working groups.
